Queen Jeongsun (Wonjong)

Queen Jeongsun of the Gyeongju Gim clan (Korean: 정순왕후 김씨; Hanja: 靜順王后 金氏; 1222 - 29 July 1237) or known as Queen Gyeongsun (Korean: 경순왕후; Hanja: 敬順王后) and formally called as Queen Mother Sungyeong (Korean: 순경태후; Hanja: 順敬太后) was the first wife of King Wonjong of Goryeo and the mother of his successor, Chungnyeol of Goryeo.[1]

Biography

She was born in 1222 as the daughter of Kim Yak-seon (김약선) and Lady Choe of the Ubong Choe clan (부인 우봉 최씨), daughter of Choe U who was the second dictator of the Ubong Choe Military regime.

She later married Crown Prince Wang Jeong and was given the royal title of Worthy Consort Gyeongmok (경목현비, 敬穆賢妃). Then, in 1235, she formally became the crown princess consort (황태자비, 皇太子妃). One year later, in 1236, she gave birth to a son, the future king Chungnyeol of Goryeo but a year later she died. When her husband came to the throne, he gave her the posthumous title of Queen Jeongsun (정순왕후; 靜順王后) in 1262 and after her son became king, he bestowed the title as Queen Mother on her.

Her tomb is located in Gareung tomb, Neungnae-ri, Yangdo-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon Metropolitan City. In 1992, her tomb was designated as "Incheon Historic Site no. 370".
