Early life

Ran started singing when she was in elementary school and was interested in anime and manga when she was a teenager.[7] She learned about Vocaloid because of the community.[8]

Career

2015–2020: Early career

Ran had various life problems and was depressed until the end of 2015, but started her YouTube channel on May 26, 2015 after remembering the anime songs she used to listen to.[9] Although she didn't have any knowledge of Japanese, she posted her first Japanese cover on August 15, 2016, recording in her bedroom.[10] Prior to gaining attention as a YouTuber, she taught robotics at a vocational school.

2020–2021: Rise to prominence

On March 31, 2020, Ran released a Japanese cover version of Doja Cat's single "Say So".[11] Translated by fellow YouTuber Datenkou, the video gained the attention of Doja Cat while on an Instagram livestream after a fan suggested that she listen to her cover.[12] Doja Cat praised Ran during her listen, calling her voice "beautiful."[13][14] Ran expressed her happiness and gratitude on Twitter, thanking the fan that suggested the song.[15][16] In August, she posted a Japanese cover of The Weeknd's song "Blinding Lights," which earned praise from The Weeknd himself.[17]

2021–present: Debut in Japan

On October 2, 2020, Ran made her Japanese debut with the remix of her cover of "Say So" by Tofubeats.[18][19] On October 29, 2020, Ran uploaded a cover of Miki Matsubara's 1979 song "Mayonaka no Door" arranged by Natsuki Harada of Evening Cinema,[20][21] with the cover gaining popularity in Indonesia.[10] The cover led people to rediscover the original, and is attributed by Billboard as the reason the original gained popularity throughout the rest of the world.[22][23] On December 11, 2020, she covered Momoko Kikuchi's song "Blind Curve".[24]

On March 26, 2021, she released custom pink vinyl covers of "Mayonaka no Door" and "Blind Curve" through Sony Music Japan,[25][26][27] which peaked at No. 49 on the Oricon charts.[28] On August 23, 2021, she appeared on the NHK-BS program Cool Japan ~Hakkutsu! Kakkoī Nippon~, where she performed her cover of "Mayonaka no Door."[29] That same day, she released a cover of Tatsuro Yamashita's song "Ride on Time".[30]
