Rao (Indian surname)

Rao is a title and a surname native to India. Its used mostly in states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra. In some states the surname is not restricted to one community and are used by two or more communities. In Karnataka the surname can be found in Kannada Brahmins and Kshatriyas and occasionally in Konkani and Tulu speakers. In Rajasthan, Rao's are considered Rajputs and in Maharastra it is used mainly by Maratha and Brahmins following Madhwacharya. In Andhra Pradesh the title was exclusively used as a princely and Zamindhari title by Kapu's and Kamma's and also by Telugu Brahmins.
