Relja Popović

Relja Popović (Serbian Cyrillic: Реља Поповић, born on 2 August 1989) is a Serbian rapper, singer-songwriter and actor who rose to prominence as member of Elitni Odredi.

Life and career

Popović was born in Belgrade on August 2, 1989 and spent his childhood in the Paviljoni neighborhood of New Belgrade. He was raised by single mother Zoja Begolli (née Đoković), who was the primaballerina at the National Theatre in Belgrade, since his father, Srđan Popović, had died in 1991.[1][2] According to Relja, he was introduced to hip-hop by his older brother, Miša, through artists such as Eminem, Jay-Z and Juice, and started writing songs in middle school. Before finishing high school Popović was injured in a gunfire and had his kidney and spleen removed.[3] He graduated from the Faculty of Media and Communications at the Singidunum University an also attended the Academy of Arts studying acting.[4]

He began his music career in 2005 alongside childhood friend Vladimir Matović, as a member of the pop rap duo Elitni Odredi. They first gained significant public attention with the release of "Moja jedina" in 2008, before becoming one of the most popular regional acts at the time with hits such as: "Ne koči", "Beograd" (2012), "Zapali grad", "Ima mnogo žena i kafana" (2013) and "Alkohola litar" (2014).[5] Following the duo's hiatus in March 2015, Popović pursued a successful solo career with debut single "Beograd još živi". At the beginning of 2020, Popović established record label imprint called Made in Blkn Records in distribution deal with IDJTunes. The company was eventually expended to a clothing brand the following year.[6]

Beyond his music career, Popović also ventured into acting. In 2003, he made his on screen debut in Vladimir Perišić's short film Dremano oko, which was elected for the Cinefoundation programe at the Cannes Festival. He had also collaborated with the director on his existentialist feature film Ordinary People in 2009 and subsequently received the Heart of Sarajevo award at the Sarajevo Film Festival for the best male actor. In 2011, Popović appeared in the box office success The Parade by Srđan Dragojević.

He has been in a romantic relationship with singer Nikolija Jovanović since Elitni Odredi had collaborated with her on the single "Alkohola litar" in 2014.[7] The couple has two daughters.[8][9]
