Robert M. Love

Robert Matthew Love ONZM is a New Zealand endodontist, academic and researcher in the field of endodontics. Love is the current Dean and Head of the School of Dentistry and Oral Health at Griffith University.[1][2] In 2018, he was awarded the Order of New Zealand Merit for his services to dentistry.

Research and career

Love completed his doctorate from University of Otago in 1999.[3] Before joining Griffith University in 2016, as head of the School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Love was the Head of department and Head of Endodontics at University of Otago.[4] He is the current chairman of the governing body of the Australasian Council of Dental Schools.[5][6] He is a Fellow of the dental honour organisations International College of Dentists, Acadamy Dentistry International and Pierre Fauchard Academy.[7]

He has published over 100 research publications.[8] His main area of research is studying the mechanisms involved in dentine colonisation and bacterial infection.[9][10][1][11] He has received research awards including the IADR ANZ Division Alan Docking Science Award and has been named in top 2% of world scientists by citation[12]

Love's current research focuses on co-relating endodontic infection and immune response, development of antimicrobial peptides to treat endodontic infection, and research on keratin based biomaterials that could stimulate regeneration of pulp and periradicular tissues.[13][14][15][1]

He has a long history of service to dental regulatory organisations including Chair of New Zealand’s Dental Council,[16] and roles with regulatory authorities in Australia, Canada, and Hong Kong. He is a voluntary member of the Smiles For The Pacific charity (SFTP) which provides equipment and training, upskilling and mentoring of health professionals to meet complex dental needs in underserviced areas of the South Pacific.

In 2018, he was appointed as Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to dentistry.[17][18]
