Ronald Hsu

Ronald Hsu is an American chef. He is the executive chef and part-owner of the restaurant Lazy Betty in Atlanta, Georgia.[1]

Early years

His mother, Betty Hsu, and his father owned many Chinese restaurants in Atlanta, Georgia from 1980 until 2008. The couple married in Malaysia before immigrating to the United States.[2] He attended the University of Georgia as a business major, but dreamed of becoming a chef.[3] In the spring of 2003, he started culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in Sydney, Australia. Leaving Australia 1.5 years later because of an expired visa, he worked in the kitchen of Dish in Atlanta.

Career

From there he moved to Le Barnardin where he was executive sous chef.[2] After seven years with Le Barnardin, he became executive chef at Le Colonial[4] in midtown Manhattan.[5] Two years later he returned to Le Barnardin as the creative director.[6][7]

In 2018 he was one of the chefs that competed in the Netflix series The Final Table.[6][2][8]

He is the founder and chef at a tasting menu-only restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia called Lazy Betty. The name is a humorous reference to his mother's work ethic.[6] Lazy Betty is located in Candler Park in Atlanta and Hsu's siblings Howard and Anita[9] (owners of Sweet Auburn BBQ) are partners in the restaurant.[2] Hsu won the top award as Atlanta magazine's Best of Atlanta 2019 new restaurant.[10]

Family

Hsu lives in Virginia-Highland with his wife, Jackie and their daughter, Calliope.
