Hondo and the team are forced to relive the painful memories of the Riverhill High School Massacre from six years prior as they hunt down a copycat who is planning to re-enact the same attack on a high school with a higher body count.

Jessica and Chris go on an undercover mission in Mexico City, without any back-up, to rescue a US federal agent who has been kidnapped by a drug-dealing gang that Jess worked undercover in a few years ago. Meanwhile, Hondo engages in small home renovation projects, which worries his mother, Charice, that he has something that is causing him emotional strain.

The S.W.A.T team works with the FBI to stop a separatist who is trying to use weapons-grade plutonium for a terrorist plot. Also, the team participates in law enforcement's annual charity competition against the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Hondo and the 20-David squad race to locate their former team leader, Buck Spivey when the latter goes AWOL and they fear he may have become suicidal. The search for Buck which coincides with SWAT's toughest mission was shown in flashback as team members received counseling discussing mental difficulties working on SWAT.

SWAT hunts down a group of drug smugglers who crash a plane on the suburbs of LA after joint operation with DEA goes awry. Also, Hondo tries to make amends with Nichelle, Luca experiences anxiety about his return to the field, and Deacon hesitates when asked to speak to a group of recruits about mental health.

As the COVID-19 pandemic begins to take hold in Los Angeles, the SWAT team continues the pursuit of El Diablo's drug cartel scattered in the city and hunting down Jihadist group detonating bombs in coordinated attacks. Meanwhile, Hondo, his father, Daniel Sr. and his teen charge Darryl confront the history of racial tension in Los Angeles between law enforcement and the Black community, through flashbacks to the city in 1992 following the Rodney King verdict.

Hondo comes back from his Mexican furlough to find that the department is reinstating 20 squad. But Hicks lets them know that neither Hondo nor Deacon are going to be team leader (taking the 20-David call-sign). They're bringing someone new in to lead the squad.

A robbery takes place, in which a gunfight occurs with private security. The thieves decide to leave one of their own behind and so it develops into a hostage situation. When the squad rolls out, the reception the new team leader receives is frosty at best (especially from Luca).

Hondo's new call-sign is 27-David.

Deacon and the new team leader take a run at the captured criminal and he gives them a couple of leads. It seems like the robbery might've just been a set up for a bigger crime, possibly a Mass Casualty Event.

The squad rolls on a possible target, but Hondo and Sanchez disagree on an entry strategy (which gets awkward). It turns out that the suspect is in a wheelchair and the actual robber was his caretaker. Hondo stays with Black Betty and the squad gets on fine without him. The caretaker doesn't talk, but her phone records do. Street and Alonso talk about their relationship while running down a lead.

They discover that the crew are going after a DEA evidence warehouse, they roll out, but they're too late. The crew have already started their escape, running through some underground tunnels. Luckily, they catch up with them all.

Sanchez confesses that he was sent there to discover why the team 'imploded', Street and Alonso decide to keep working together and not pursue a relationship (for now) and a SWAT cadet thanks Hondo for doing what he did, explaining that Hondo's the reason he signed up.
