S. P. Velumani

Sugunapuram Palanisamy Velumani, born 10 May 1969, is an Indian politician and current Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Thondamuthur state assembly constituency. He is seasoned politician and prominent leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam currently serving as organising Secretary and Secretary of Coimbatore South Rural District.[1] He has won the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections in 2006, 2011,[2] 2016 & 2021 as an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate. He was previously the Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development, Law and Implementation of Special Programme.[3][4]He has never lost an election for last 20 years.

Personal life

S. P. Velumani, was born on May 10, 1969, in Sugunapuram, Kuniyamuthur, Coimbatore district, to E.A Palanisamy and Mayilathal. S. P. Velumani holds an M.A. degree and an M. Phil from Annamalai University.

Political career

He served as Kuniyamuthur Municipal Chairman. He won the 2006 Tamil Nadu state legislature elections from Perur constituency as an AIADMK candidate. He registered marginal victories in the 2011 and 2016 elections from the newly formed constituency of Thondamuthur.

He was given his first ministerial portfolio in 2011 when he was made the Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Law.

Corruption controversy

Velumani is accused of awarding as many as 349 civil contracts, worth several crores of rupees, between 2014 and 2018, to firms run by his benamis.[5] In a petition to the High Court, an NGO Arappor Iyakkam accused the minister of favoritism and corruption in granting contracts to Chennai and Coimbatore Corporations, thus breaching the Tamil Nadu Tender Transparency Act 1998 and the terms of the Competition Act 2002 in a petition to the High Court.[6] The News Channel Times Now tracked down firms connected to Velumani and exposed a 104% turnover boost in 3 years. The companies exposed were run by his kin and his loyals.[7] Following the exposure, the Times Group filed a complaint with the Chennai Commissioner of Police, alleging abuse of a senior correspondent with the Chennai-based Times of India.[8]
