[5] The Positive Impact Rating 2021 Report launched at the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) global forum recognized SPJIMR with the highest “Level 5” rating for its innovative community-based actions, environmental and socially responsible culture and governance, and a strong teaching focus on responsible leadership. [6]”
History
In 1981, SPJIMR was inaugurated by the British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher [7] as the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's [8] Institute for Master of Management Studies. The first batch joined the institute for the Master of Management Studies, or MMS programme. The Class of 1983, was placed in several top companies including BPCL, HDFC Ltd., Johnson & Johnson, Wipro, Asian Paints, Nerolac Paints Ltd, Godrej & Boyce etc.

In 1986, Dr. M.L. Shrikant joined the institute as the Dean and led the institution for almost three decades, introducing new methods of teaching and imparting management education. Apart from other initiatives, Dr. Shrikant conceived, and delivered the course ‘Science of Spirituality’, a unique blend of education and experience of leading business organisations along with his study of the Vedanta. [9]
In 1992, SPJIMR acquired an autonomous status that gave it the freedom to design its curriculum as well as the freedom to hire faculty and choose participants based on a unique mix of performance and values. [10] The MMS programme was then renamed as PGDM.
In 1994 and 1995, Development of Corporate Citizenship (DoCC) [11] and ADMAP (Assessment and Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential) [12] were launched respectively. The PGDM students work with non-profit organisations in rural India for six weeks as part of DoCC. Students from PGDM work in committees as part of ADMAP. This helps develop skills to enhance their managerial potential. [13]
In 2000, Autumns internships were started for the PGDM students after they completed their specialisation phase. This ensured that they were more industry ready.
In June 2015, Dr. M.L. Shrikant was succeeded by Dr. Ranjan Banerjee as the Dean of the institute. [14] In 2016, SPJIMR’s new rebranded logo was unveiled. [15] The five upward strokes represent the five personality attributes of the new SPJIMR brand – authentic, dynamic, grounded, innovative, and socially sensitive. [16]
In 2016 SPJIMR collaborated with Harvard Business School (HBS) Publishing to be the national training partner for teaching using business simulations. [17] SPJIMR also set up a Design Thinking lab, to make learning more relevant and practical.
The Post Graduate Management Programme for Women (PGMPW) was launched in 2016. [18] The programme is a full-time management programme for women who have taken a career break and seek to return to their professional careers. SPJIMR also launched the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) in 2016 to prepare the next generation of academic researchers and thought leaders. [19]
In 2018, SPJIMR received the accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), International. [20] The Delhi centre was also inaugurated in the same year with long-term and short-term programmes. [21] These focused on Executive Education and was designed to meet the needs of middle to senior-level executives. [22]
In 2019, a new building opened with state-of-the-art classrooms, group work rooms, a Design Thinking Lab,[23] a new library and an MDP room. It also has a new auditorium named after Dr. M. L. Shrikant. [24]
March 2020 saw the world grapple with COVID-19 bringing life to a halt. SPJIMR pushed back and brought [25]all the programmes online within 24 hours of the lockdown. Academics, inaugurations, farewells, meetings went online seamlessly. [26]
In September 2021 Dr. Varun Nagaraj took over as the Dean of the Institute [27] following Dr. Ranjan Banerjee who led the institute till early 2021. [28]
Campus

SPJIMR is situated on a 45-acre campus, in the metropolis of Mumbai. [29]

The Management Development Programmes (MDPs) are designed in conjunction with the current business dynamics and the process of translating them to actionable learning content. "The Management Development Programmes use interactive methodology based on case studies, role-plays and simulations. Exposure to open discussions and one-on-one coaching along with experiential learning helps in bringing out the best business learning for participants”. [45]
Non-Classroom Learning
SPJIMR’s Non-Classroom Learning includes experiential learning courses to build personal leadership, team skills and sensitivity to the social environment. It offers three distinct levels of learning: Self-awareness, Self-management, and Societal awareness. [46]
Five Pillars of Non-Classroom learning are:

Abhyudaya - Students of the 2-year full time, PGDM programme mentor school children from underprivileged backgrounds for a year. [47]
ADMAP - This course introduces participants to self-learning and management of the self’ through the prism of ‘doing, observing, reflecting and recording’. [48]
DoCC - Development of Corporate Citizenship (DoCC) aims at engaging with social sector initiatives across India. The SPJIMR community engages with rural communities as part of the curriculum where students both volunteer and intern with organizations working in the social sector. [49]
PG Lab - The Personal Growth Lab helps build personal leadership and team skills through indoor and outdoor activities, psychometric tests and experiential exercises. This is an outbound course delivered to participants in the hills near Mumbai. [50]
The Science of Spirituality (SOS) course is based upon insights and practices from Eastern Wisdom and Traditions (Advaita, Vedanta, Buddhism, etc.) and the growing field of Mindfulness. [51]
International collaborations and student exchange programmes
SPJIMR has collaborated with global business schools and universities from around the world to equip its participants with a diverse understanding of business and management across national and cultural boundaries.[52] Students travel to universities in the US and Europe as part of their curriculum requirements and gain cutting-edge inputs in their area of specialisation.[53]
Industry integration
SPJIMR exposes its students to current industry practices through guest lectures, live industry projects, internships and International company visits among many more.
SPJIMR Business-Academia Conclave (SBAC) is a one-day annual event with marquee speakers to address Indian academics, students, and corporates. [54]
Samavesh is an annual conclave where industry and academia share a platform to discuss contemporary business issues and address important questions prevailing in today’s business environment. [55]
Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) is an international professional organization that provides a platform for academicians, researchers and practitioners to disseminate research and provide insights into challenges, opportunities, and emerging strategies in the domain of Operations and Supply Chain. [56]
Autumns internships: SPJIMR’s PGDM students intern with top companies at the end of their third semester (autumn/fall). [57] “The autumns project backed by advanced knowledge of the chosen specialisation helps students generate greater pre-placement offers (PPOs) and pre-placement interviews (PPIs) opportunities”.
Centres of Excellence: The Centres of Excellence have been formed to explore newer opportunities, build the existing initiatives and drive inventive education. The centres mainly reach out to sections that are usually not served by modern day B-Schools. [58]
