An assassination attempt on him by his uncle and then emir Sultan bin Hammud, had failed when he was young. A boy of 12 when he was made emir, his mother, Fatima Al Zamil, and his maternal relatives of the Al Sabhan family ruled as regents on his behalf until 1914[2] based on the constitution. Saud defeated the forces of Ibn Saud in the battle of Jarrab on 24 January 1915.[3] In the battle Ibn Saud's British companion Captain Shakespeare was killed.[3]
