Sergi Arola

Sergi Arola (b. March 4, 1968) has earned a reputation as being a culinary trend-setter, fusing Catalonian and Mediterranean cuisines.[1] His teachers include: Ferran Adrià (working at Talaia Mar restaurant and as the meat section’s chef de partie at el Bulli),[2] Juan Mari Arzak, [3] Pierre Gagnaire[4] and Roger Vergé.[5] In 1989 he began work at Barcelona’s L'Aram which led to him discovering his creative culinary side.[6]

Recognition

Arola was discovered by the Salaverris, who invited him to work in their restaurant and the first elBulli laboratory.[7] This ultimately led to his taking charge of La Broche – a restaurant that required significant renovation[8] which received two Michelin stars in 2011.[9] In 2015[10] he became part of a fusion of jazz and Spanish tapas with the opening of Abu Dhabi’s ‘Pearls and Caviar by Sergi Arola’ in 2015. Other places Arola has played a key culinary role in include: the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía,[11] Las Ventanas in Mexico, Iberia’s Business Class menus[12] and V Club feat Arola where he was Gastronomic director.[13]

Awards

Arola has received various awards including:

  • 1999: Chef l’Avenir Award from the Académie Internationale de la Gastronomie (International Academy of Gastronomy)[14]
  • 2001: Chef of the Year from Gourmetour Guide[15]
  • 2002: National Gastronomy Award from the Real Academia Española de Gastronomía (Royal Spanish Academy of Gastronomy)[16]
  • 2009: Appointed the face of Berberena.[17]

Arola has appeared in the following TV shows: MasterChef[18] and El Discípulo de Chef.
