Shane Wright (ice hockey)

Shane Wright (born January 5, 2004) is a Canadian ice hockey player for the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. Wright is rated as a top prospect[1] who is expected to be the top pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.[2]

Playing career

Wright was granted "exceptional player status" for the 2019–20 OHL season, and had one of the best seasons in OHL rookie history, breaking the points per game record set by Connor McDavid.[3] He is the sixth player to be granted exceptional status, with the preceding five being John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad, Connor McDavid, Sean Day and Joe Veleno.[4]

He would go on to win the Emms Family Award for OHL Rookie of the Year.[5] He scored 39 goals in 58 games and was named an alternate captain of the Kingston Frontenacs midway through the season.

He is currently in his third season in the OHL, as captain of the Kingston Frontenacs. He is highly regarded to be the first overall pick in the 2022 NHL draft.

International play

He captained the Canada men's national under-18 ice hockey team to a gold medal in the 2021 IIHF World U18 Championships, finishing second in the tournament scoring race and scoring two goals in the final against Russia.[6]
