Shushan Petrosyan

Shushan Samveli Petrosyan (born 23 September 1967) is an Armenian singer, Honored Artist of Armenia,[1] and a former deputy in the National Assembly of Armenia.[1]

Biography

Shushan Petrosyan was born on 23 September 1967 in Yerevan.[1] In 1987, she graduated from Terlemezyan College of Fine Arts' painting program.[1] In 1993, she graduated from Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts' graphics program.[1] From 1989 to 1991, she worked in "Ardzagank" theater-studio (Metro theater) as a costume designer. She composed three performances: "Mythical Eternity", "Antigone", and "The Lord and the Servant".[1] From 1994-1997, she worked at the State Song Theater.[1] In 1996 she became a soloist for the Armenian State Philharmonic.[1] From 2002-2003, she worked as a lecturer at the Yerevan State Institute of Cinema and Theater.[1] In 2005, she became an academician of the International Academy of Nature and Society.[1] In 2006, she was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Armenia.[1]

She is married and has two children.[1]

Her husband, Arman Harutyunyan, works in the 6th Department for Fighting Organized Crime of the Armenian Police.[2][3] He is known to some sections of the public as a participant in the bloody events of March 1, 2008. It is particularly known that on March 1 Harutyunyan severely beat Gagik Shamshyan, then a journalist with the Chorrord Ishkhanutyun newspaper, handcuffed him and dragged him from Swan Lake to Freedom Square in Yerevan.[4][5] In 2008 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Mayor of Yerevan and the "Vazgen Sargsyan" Order of the Ministry of Defense.[1]

A. Harutyunyan is also known as "a person who beats".[5] His name is associated with the brutal beating of a taxi driver in Yerevan, the beating of former military prosecutor Gagik Jahangiryan at the 6th Department of the Armenian Police.[5]

A. Harutyunyan even threatened to beat Menua Harutyunyan, the owner of the Slak.am website, which is considered a "man of power", for the fact that critical materials about Shushan Petrosyan were published on the website belonging to the latter.[6] He is no longer a deputy from 2019, he has left politics.

Music career

Shushan Petrosyan is quite a famous singer in the field of pop music in Armenia. She has participated in concerts organized for the representatives of the Armenian Diaspora in Armenia and abroad and has given solo concerts. The songs "Eraz im erkir Hayastan" («Երազ իմ երկիր Հայաստան») and "Sparapet" («Սպարապետ») sung by her are especially famous. The singer dedicated the last song to Vazgen Sargsyan. He often sang during political events,[7] at parties organized by high-ranking Armenian officials and the rich.[8] In particular, he regularly participated in the presidential election campaign of the National Assembly of Armenia, singing during the campaigns of the Republican Party of Armenia.[7] She has received numerous awards during her musical career, including:

Political career

Deputy work

On 6 May 2012, Shushan Petrosyan was elected a Deputy of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia by the pre-election list of the Republican Party of Armenia.[1] She was a member of the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sports.[1]

The Armenian society did not accept the fact that Shushan Petrosyan became an MP, giving negative qualifications to the latter.[9]

Shushan Petrosyan has hardly shown any political activity during her parliamentary activity. She rarely makes speeches, she votes for the projects, which are voted by all the RPA deputies. She sometimes convenes press conferences, during which she supports the chairman of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, its members, and the position of the latter.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]

Shushan Petrosyan is considered one of the most silent deputies of the National Assembly, as he has never made a speech, has not submitted any bill for discussion.[17]

Relations with the opposition

Shushan Petrosyan thinks that the RA opposition field is composed of immoral people, as the latter often approaches the actions of the RPA and RA President Serzh Sargsyan.[18]

Russian Griboyedov Club

Despite her passive domestic politics, Shushan Petrosyan actively participates in the meetings of the Griboyedov Club, founded by the head of the largest Russian media holding Dmitry Kiselyov in Armenia, and is a member of that club. During the meetings of the club members, those present discuss issues of Russian presence in Armenia, keeping Armenia under the influence of Russia.[19][20][21]

Social opinion

The Armenian society mainly has a negative attitude towards the activity of the politician Shushan Petrosyan. Almost every one of her political steps causes anger, often ridicule, to a large part of the population.

Shushan Petrosyan often becomes a subject of public criticism because of her views.

History of 5000 AMD election bribe

After the 2013 RA presidential election, during Kentron TV's "Armenian Friday" program, Shushan Petrosyan appealed to the people of Gyumri who voted for presidential candidate Raffi Hovannisian, saying that "it is not fair to take 5,000 drams and choose another candidate." With this statement, she confirmed the information circulating in the public, according to which the incumbent president, presidential candidate Serzh Sargsyan distributed electoral bribes of 5,000 drams. For the sentence said by Shushan Petrosyan, the residents of Gyumri were offended and boycotted the singer's concert in Gyumri, threatening to greet her with cucumbers and soaps.

A policeman's kiss

When one of the citizens protesting against the illegal construction of an illegal building at 5 Komitas Street in Yerevan, one of the policemen took advantage of the situation and licked the neck of a protester in confusion. The journalists asked the singer-deputy during a press conference about the incident that raised a wave of indignation, in response to which Shushan Petrosyan replied that she did not see anything wrong with it, just "the Armenian boy gently kissed the Armenian girl." Because of this expression, Shushan Petrosyan was ridiculed, rude descriptions were voiced, some even began to doubt the singer-MP's mental health.

Listen, puppy, I'll take your eyes off

On 11 January 2016, Shushan Petrosyan made a post on the public platform, uttering insulting and threatening expressions to citizen Gayane Shahinyan, which received a public response, and was covered by many media outlets.

Gayane Shahinyan had expressed an opinion that condolences to the relatives of Aramayis Yurik Voskanyan, a soldier wounded by an enemy bullet, were empty words. The threats voiced by Shushan Petrosyan have been more ridiculed in public and media circles, even in the form of poems.
