The making of "Asembe Isebenza". Slapdee is often regarded as one of the pioneers of Zambian hip-hop. [1][2]
Slapdee was raised by his aunt, after losing his parents and brother. Because of his aunt’s career, he moved around often, even attending schools in Botswana and South Africa. During his high school years, Slap Dee returned to Zambia where he befriended future musician Hamooba, and the two started making music together.[3]
Music career
In the year 2005, "Chiloest Records" under the proprietor Mr. Eston Chilombo; partnered with “Evelyn Hone College Radio” and DJ’s Emmanuel Aka "The Dynamite" and "DJ Posent Ndovi" of "Parliament Radio and Television" as committee members. And The legendary creative producer and content creator – “The Hardrox” Alias Mr. Peter Whiteson Watema was tasked with the Zambian music "Hip hop" history landmark ‘Talent Search Responsibility’ of creating artist ground up from Scratch. And it is from this responsibility that Slap Dee's musical career began in the same year, when he first met the "soft spoken" legendary creative executive record producer "The Hardrox", who gave "Slapdee" instant guidelines and introduced him to the "Age of Digital Studio Recordings": As well as vocal prowess and recording dynamics in "Steinberg Cubase" and Fruity Loops "FL Studio" and other DAW Softwares.
In 2006, Zambian Hip Hop took a dynamic upbeat with “The Hardrox’s” unique ears for good music, an intuitive understanding of global trends and the psychology of psyphing the audience’s listening preference: With The Hardrox’s writing and song arranging skills he had to aid cypher melodious hooks and bridges, in the art of “16 bars”. And the versatile beat maker meticulously picked a song called ‘Asembe Isebenza’ born and bred for the radio listening community which became an instant hit after Kanyimbo ka tubana. After a while, promoter Sync "Mckelvin Kabaso" got the needed buzz for a rising star by icing the cake baked by the legendary creative maestro and business intuition of Chiloest Records, and released a debut album “Asembe isebenza” which gained Slap Dee ultra-decent radio hype and generated a buzz in the Hip-hop community. Although his debut album wasn’t a success in record sales due the fact that local Hip hop was just getting founded in this part of the world.
In 2007, Slapdee released yet a second album So Che, produced under "Digital X" by Raydo, a move which was pioneered, supported and recommended by the legendary creative beatsmith and record executive producer "Mr. Peter Whiteson Watema" to create dynamics and follow leading trends, launching him into a refined household name, with hit songs Solola and Takwaba; as the two "The Hardrox and Slapdee" sat on the veranda chill-relaxing and brainstorming on the next trendy move in woodlands. "So Che" album was introduced which catapulted the young rhymesmith to national stardom and confirmed what well-informed critics had suspected; The next big thing had just arrived into the corporate world!.[4]
During this time Slapdee collaborated with songbird Sutu on Disposable and Kamba Che the second female singer to ride on a Slapdee song/(s). 2007/08 saw Slapdee embroiled in a bitter feud with crooner Mampi. As the beef raged, the listening public was spoilt with legendary tracks like Ni zee and Sunshila. In 2009 his third album Black na White was released and quickly became a fan favourite with the hits Goldigger, Fo’Shizzy and Chishinka.[5]
Between releasing great music and with his business ventures, Slapdee found himself in a hip hop beef with fellow rapper, Macky 2. A beef purely influenced by fans, the two continued to produce great music and came face-to-face in 2015 during a performance at Holiwood City "Night Club".
Slapdee has released 7 studio albums: Asembe Isebenza, So Che, Black na White, True Story, The Business, Black na White 2 (BW2) and Mother Tongue. Slapdee is signed to the Zambian record label XYZ Entertainments Which he owns.
