Archbishop Maria Calist Soosa Pakiam was born on March 11, 1946, into a fishermen family in Marthandanthurai, a coastal village in Tamil Nadu bordering Kerala. He was ordained priest on Dec. 20, 1969. He was appointed apostolic administrator of the diocese of Trivandrum on Jan. 13, 1990, and consecrated as bishop on Feb. 2, 1990. He was elevated as first archbishop of Trivandrum on June 17, 2004.

Archbishop Soosa Pakiam is chairman of the laity commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). He is a member of the commission for liturgy of the C.C.B.I. and of the laity commission of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conference (FABC). He is also chairman of the commission for anti-alcoholic movement of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
