Stephen Manas

Stephen Manas (French pronunciation: [stɛfɛn manas] (listen); born July 27, 1992) is a French actor, music composer and screenwriter.

He began his career in India, Philippines, Japan and the United Kingdom then came back to France.[1] In the 2020s, he began his first big international project with the Apple TV+ comedy series Ted Lasso, starring Jason Sudeikis. Stephen Manas is also known for many roles in French fictions and his role mainly awarded as best Actor in Out of Frame.

Early life

Stephen Manas was born on July 27, 1992 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Yvelines.[2] He grew up in Megève, a ski resort village in the southeastern Alps[3] (in Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, France). With a mother ski teacher instructor, he found a love for skiing, martial arts and outdoor sports at a young age.[4] It wasn't until the first Harry Potter movie came out that he understood his love for movies, being basically the same age as the characters.[3] Music also influences his life and he has developed a skill to play many instruments.[3][5]

At the age of 17, he moved to Lyon (France) to enter an international research school in marketing and communication. Shortly after, he is spotted on the street for acting and thus had his first glimpse of the world of cinema when he was cast for a small role in an independent film. Not yet knowing that this path will become his vocation, he continued his studies at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. After his graduation with a Master 2 in international marketing and communication research, he got a job but very quickly he realized that business buildings won't be his vocation.[5] He chose then to renew his acting experience. He spent most of his weekends practising acting, shooting student short films and playing music from age 17 to 23.[6]

Career

Acting

During the 2010s, Manas had a first glimpse of the French cinema industry when he got cast for the movie Ma premiere fois directed by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, but he still followed his MBA in marketing research studiously. At the same time, he played in many dramas on French television TF1, TMC, M6 during his studies in Paris. When a talent agency based in India cold-called him, he jumped at the chance to work in film again. He decided to move to India where he immersed himself in the Bollywood industry, building his acting résumé.[6] After two years living and working to Bollywood / Mumbai, then Manila and Tokyo, he came back to France in 2018 to tap back into French cinema.[6]

Once back in Paris, he is chosen for the role of Christian in the short film Out of Frame/Hors Champ. He will be multi awarded.[7]

In August 2019, when he was a guest for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival, Stephen Manas met an agent specializing in international casting. Barely a month later, he joined the cast of the new series Apple TV+, Ted Lasso in a recurring role,[8] playing Richard Montlaur, a young French player in a Premier League football team in England, starring Jason Sudeikis,[3][5] Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster and Brett Goldstein.

Music

Music also has an important place in his life, he started playing music at 8 years old. He first played clarinet, in a orchestra in Megève until he was 15, then he switched to saxophone and at 18, he learned piano and guitar. He then made his first compositions in 2016 when he was 24 years old, he now has his own musical production: Sound-it.[6]
