Baseball
The Strom Thurmond High School baseball team saw a resurgence under Former Coach Mack Hite. In 1982 the rebels won the school’s only state title in baseball. Until 2016 not much happened within the program. Led by Payton Smith (Future MLB Draftee) and Michael Green (Future Clemson Transfer), the rebels captured the Upper State Championship and was 1 game away from the 2016 2A State Title. The program suffered a down year in 2017 and 2018 but caught back up in 2019 a 27 win season and a District Championship. They would lose to soon-to-be State Champs Bishop England in Charleston. In 2020 the rebels was heavily favored to return deep in the playoffs with seniors such as Rhett Jolly, Brycen Patterson, Will Clark, Daniel Herlong, Hunter Corley, and Matthew Holmes. The season ended abruptly after the COVID-19 Pandemic altered and cancelled the season. In 2021 the rebels would have one of the most surprising and magical seasons the town has ever seen. Voted outside the pre-season poll and not picked to make the playoffs, the rebels fought their way into 2nd place in the high contested region. Led by Winthrop signee, Caleb Jones, the rebels would push through and ultimately play for the region championship. Senior Dalton Hitt would throw 3 major region games and earn the win for all 3. Some of the rebels miracles include: Upsetting #1 ranked Brookland-Cayce in 8 innings, defeating Gilbert in a hostile environment, and sweeping rival Fox Creek to secure a spot in the playoffs (and a spot to play for the region championship). Around this time it was announced that Head Coach Mack Hite would depart for Emerald after the season. The rebels didn’t let this faze them and would defeat Rival Gilbert 2-1 after a walk off single by Sophomore Catcher Ethan Bates to capture the region championship. They would breeze through and capture a District Championship before falling to Gilbert in the lower state series. On June 11th, 2021 Nathan Horton was announced the new head coach. Horton was formally the Head Baseball Coach at Saluda High School (Thurmond’s historical rival)
