Świekatowo

Świekatowo (Polish: [ɕfjɛkaˈtɔvɔ]; German: Schwekatowo, 1942–1945: Schweike) is a village in Świecie County, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in north-central Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Świekatowo. It lies approximately 23 kilometres (14 mi) west of Świecie and 35 km (22 mi) north of Bydgoszcz.

The village has a population of 1,700.

History

After the Second Peace of Thorn in 1466, the region of Pomerelia was ceded by the Teutonic Order to the Polish Crown. With the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the region was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia.

The village, as Schwekatowo, belonged to the West Prussian district of Schwetz in Germany until the end of World War I. According to the German census of 1910, it had a population of 814, of which 407 (50%) were Germans and 407 (50%) were Poles.[1] As a result of the Treaty of Versailles, the village had to be ceded by Germany to the Second Polish Republic in 1920.

During the German invasion of Poland in 1939, German forces on 3 September murdered 26 Poles. The massacre happened as Poles were attending Church mass from which they were dragged out by German soldiers and shot.[2] From 1939 to 1945, under German occupation, the village belonged to the administrative region of Marienwerder in Reichsgau Danzig-West Prussia. In 1942, it was renamed Schweike. Towards the end of World War II, the village was captured by the Red Army and was restored to Poland.
