The War Zone (TWZ)[1] is an online magazine oriented towards military, defense, and geopolitics coverage and analysis. The magazine was created in 2016 by founder and editor-in-chief Tyler Rogoway. The publication primarily covers topics associated with aerial, naval, ground, space, and cyber warfare, as well as geopolitical context. The site maintains a highly loyal audience of tech and defense enthusiasts, defense and national security industry professionals, and military members and veterans. It is the sister publication of The Drive and an imprint of Recurrent Ventures, a subsidiary of North Equity. While co-branded with sister publication The Drive, and hosted on the same website, it is an independent publication with its own masthead.[2]

Coverage

The War Zone has broken a number of stories which reached national and international prominence, particularly relating to advanced U.S. defense technology, Chinese missile[3] drone,[4] and railgun[5] technology as well as UFO encounters reported by military and commercial airline pilots.[6]

History

The War Zone was established by Tyler Rogoway, who left Jalopnik's similarly positioned subsidiary Foxtrot Alpha to create a spin off of The Drive, a popular automotive focused online magazine. In 2018, North Equity was established as a private equity firm for the purposes of acquiring The Drive from Time, Inc., and along with it, The War Zone. From 2018 to 2021, North placed both into portfolio company Brookline Media while it built out its rollup business model. In June 2021, North announced the creation of Recurrent Ventures, a subsidiary which now owns publications including Popular Science, MEL Magazine, Field & Stream, and Task & Purpose, and the companies within Brookline Media, including The War Zone.[7]
