Tropical Storm Sam

The name Sam or Samuel has been used for four tropical cyclones worldwide, one in the North Atlantic, two in the Western Pacific Ocean, and one in the Australian region of the Pacific. After 2000, the name Sam was retired in that region.

In the North Atlantic:

• Hurricane Sam (2021) – A large and long-lived Category 4 hurricane that churned in the open ocean, before striking Iceland.

In the Western Pacific:

• Tropical Storm Sam (1999) (T9910, 16W, Luding) – A Category 1-equivalent severe tropical storm that made landfall in the Philippines, China, and South Korea.
• Tropical Storm Usagi (2018) (T1829, 33W, Samuel) – A Category 2-equivalent typhoon (a Severe Tropical Storm, according to the JMA) that made landfall in the Philippines and Vietnam.

In the Australian region:

• Cyclone Sam (2000) – a severe tropical cyclone that made landfall in Western Australia, which later had its name retired in the basin.
