Tshafti airstrike

The Tshafti massacre was a mass extrajudicial killing that took place in Tshafti (Tigrinya: ፅሓፍቲ) in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia during the Tigray War, 13 November 2020.[1] Tshafti is a village that belongs to woreda Wajirat, Southeastern Zone of Tigray.

Massacre

The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) killed nine[1] up to 16 civilians[2] in airstrikes on Tshafti (Southeastern Tigray) on 13 November 2020. Involvement of UAE drones is also reported.[2]

Perpetrators

Relatives and witnesses reported the perpetrators of this massacre as being the Ethiopian army, as well as drone attacks, presumably by the United Arab Emirates Air Force.[2]

Victims

The “Tigray: Atlas of the humanitarian situation” mentions nine victims of this massacre,[1] Tghat mentions 16 identified victims.[2]

Reactions

The “Tigray: Atlas of the humanitarian situation”,[1] that documented this massacre received international media attention, particularly regarding its Annex A, that lists massacres in the Tigray War.[3][4][5][6]

After months of denial by the Ethiopian authorities that massacres occurred in Tigray, a joint investigation by OHCHR and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission was announced in March 2021.[7]
