Utanga is close to Mombass Port in Kenya.

Management

It is under UNHCR operation. As of 1993 there were about 40,000 Somali refugees in Utanga and also a smaller number of Ethiopians. UNICEF, World Food Program (WFP), International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), Pharmaciens sans frontières (PSF), and the Kenyan Red Cross Society (KRCS) (Ibid.) are responsible for healthcare, food and water distribution.[1]

Fighting

In August 1993, fourteen people were injured and a Somali teenager was killed in fighting between groups who were armed with bows and arrows. The fighting followed an argument a Kenyan bus driver had with Somali passengers.[2]

Sponsorship

The International Rescue Committee facilitated sponsorship for some refugees to go to America.[3]

American congresswoman Ilhan Omar spent four years in Utanga with her family as a child.[4]
