Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 55% based on 20 critics, with an average rating of 6.3/10. The site's critics consensus states: "Journey Into Buddhism: Vajra Sky Over Tibet explores a fascinating subject with visual flair, but dull narration and a dawdling pace make it a less than illuminating watch".[4] On Metacritic, Vajra Sky Over Tibet has an above average score of 61 out of a 100 based on 13 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[5]

Nathan Lee of The New York Times said that "this documentary glimpse at the sights and sounds of occupied Tibet amounts to a rhetorically inflated vacation video".[6]

According to Richard Kuipers of Variety magazine, the film is "beautifully shot inside Tibet's most sacred sites ... the peaceful principles of the faith infuse every frame".[7]

Walter Addiego of the San Francisco Chronicle said that Vajra Sky Over Tibet "[have an] impressionistic feeling to all this", adding to it that "[it] sometimes plays like a travelogue".[8]

Bill White of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer said that "there is a lot of history to be learned here, but the teaching is so slow paced that the most alert student may fall into a stupor by the end of class".[9]
