Valerie Browning

Valerie Browning AM is an Australian nurse who is known for her work with Afar people in Ethiopia.[1] She has founded Afar Pastoral Development Association.[2]

Browning used to work in Armidale, New South Wales before she started working as a volunteer in Ethiopia in 1973.[3] Since then, she is living in Ethiopia with Afar people and is helping them with basic needs of life such as safe child birth and health.[3]

She has also worked in Sudanese refugee camps, Djibouti and Eritrea.[4]

In 1999, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.[5]

Family

Browning married elder of Afar clan, Ismael Ali Gardo, in 1989.[6][4] She has a two-year adopted son, Nabil.[3]
