Vermont Woman

Vermont Woman was founded in 1985 by Suzanne Gillis.[3] Rickey Gard Diamond was the first editor of the paper, which launched with 44 pages and an initial circulation of 20,000.[4] Gillis financially backed the paper[5] and despite a strong start, the paper lost money 4 of its first 5 years of existence. In 1990, the paper was shut down due to financial challenges.[6] The final edition of the paper featured an interview with 3-term Vermont Governor Madeleine Kunin. Gillis went on to work for the newly-formed (and now defunct) Vermont Times.

Eighteen years after it shut down, in 2003, Vermont Woman was re-launched by Gillis.[7] The paper has since won a number of awards, including the New England Newspapers and Publishers Association's designation of Newspaper of the Year in 2007 and 2008.[8]

In 2010, Gillis was inducted in the New England Newspapers Hall of Fame for her commitment to independent publishing and for providing a forum for women's voices and perspectives.[8] In 2012, long-time editor Rickey Gard Diamond and Vermont Woman won a national award from the National Newspapers Association, 3rd place in the category of Best Investigative or In-Depth Story or Series, Non-daily Division, circulation 10,000 or more.[9]

Vermont Woman hosts a lecture series that has featured speakers like Ann Richards,[10] Valerie Plame,[11] Gloria Steinem, and Jehan Sadat.[12]
