Watchtower (2012 film)

Watchtower (Turkish: Gözetleme kulesi) is a 2012 Turkish drama film directed by Pelin Esmer and starring Olgun Simsek and Nilay Erdonmez. The film was premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2013.[1]

Plot

Former carpenter Nihat works as a fire watcher at a watchtower, when, one day, he meets Seher, an educated and intelligent cafe-worker. Both Nihat and Seher suffer from personal events and are trying to heal their damaged souls.[1]

Critical response

The Hollywood Reporter have called Watchtower "slow-burning, socially-conscious melodrama" which, according to The Hollywood Reporter is also "disappointingly conventional second fiction-feature from one of Turkey's more promising writer-directors".[1] Howard Feinstein said that "although prejudice against women, especially in rural Turkey, is never out of the director’s sights, she keeps it contained so that the personal tale is never overshadowed by more theoretical concerns".[2] Rouven Linnarz of Asian Movie Pulse said that Watchtower is a "very subtle and quiet drama about guilt and trauma".[3]
