We're No Angels (Angeles album)

We're No Angels is the debut studio album by American hard rock band Angeles. It was released on September 18, 1984, by Mystic Records. Hit Parader described the album as "a tight powerful collection of metal anthems" that "manages to elicit plenty of excitement on tracks such as 'Nasty Girls' and 'No Sugar Tonight'." The title of the album We're No Angels, was decided by Kevin DuBrow, vocalist of Quiet Riot.[1] In 1984, in promotion of the album, Angeles provided direct-support for Bon Jovi at the Reseda Country Club.

Background

Halfway through recording the album, drummer Paul Del Boccio and bassist John Azar left the band; they started their own band called "Azar" and released a demo cassette in 1984.[2] The song "Blade of Steel" is the only song to feature writing credits to Del Boccio and Azar.[3]

Drummer John Merritt and Bassist Tom Leslie join the band and finish the album.

Writing and recording

"We're No Angels" was produced and engineered by Gary DuLac, whose Engineering was concurrently being featured on three Metal Massacre compilations. Gary Dulac used Harlequin Studios, located in Northridge, CA. The album was Mixed at Westlake Recording Studios by Robb Klein, who went on to found Orange Tree Productions.[4] Final Touches and editing were done at Roman Sound International, a studio most known for handling the post-production [5] of the TV Series Cheers and Happy Days.[6]

Artwork

The cover was airbrushed by Jim Evans, who also created the cover art for the Beastie Boys' album Ill Communication and the Neil Young album Rust Never Sleeps.
