History
The building was originally designed in the Neo-Georgian style as an educational establishment and opened as the Tate School in March 1867.[1] The design involved a symmetrical of nine bays facing Belvedere Road; the central bay featured an arched doorway in the central bay and sash windows in the other bays on the ground floor and in the bays on the first floor. After the school got into financial difficulties and closed in 1949, the building was acquired by Wexford Corporation in 1950.[1] It served as the offices of Wexford Corporation until 2007.[2] It was subsequently sold to the Courts Service for conversion into a courthouse to replace the aging courthouse on Hill Street which had been built in 1930.[3][4] The building on Belevedere Road was officially re-opened as a courthouse by Charles Flanagan, Minister for Justice and Equality, and Frank Clarke, Chief Justice of Ireland, in February 2018.[5]
