WhereIsPengShuai
#WhereIsPengShuai is a hashtag, used mainly in social media, and a grassroots campaign to raise awareness about the disappearance of Chinese tennis athlete, Peng Shuai.

Purpose
The hashtag, #WhereIsPengShuai, first appeared on Twitter on November 12, 2021.[1] The hashtag was quickly picked up and used by the tennis community to call attention to Peng Shuai's disappearance.[2][3] On November 13, French player Alize Cornet tweeted, "Let's not remain silent #WhereIsPengShuai".[4] On November 14 American Tennis player Chris Evert retweeted the hashtag and added:
Yes, these accusations are very disturbing. I’ve known Peng since she was 14; we should all be concerned; this is serious; where is she? Is she safe? Any information would be appreciated.[5]
On November 18, tennis champion Serena Williams tweeted a photo of Peng Shuai overlaid with the hashtag and wrote:
I am devastated and shocked to hear about the news of my peer, Peng Shuai. I hope she is safe and found as soon as possible. This must be investigated and we must not stay silent. Sending love to her and her family during this incredibly difficult time. #whereispengshaui [6]
International
The hashtag appeared as #OùEstPengShuai[7] in French media and #DondeEstaPengShuai[8] in Spanish media.
China's Response
The name Peng Shuai was censored in China within 30 minutes of a social media post authored by Peng Shuai accusing former vice premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual violence.[9] It is therefore assumed the hashtag, #WhereIsPengShuai remains unknown to Chinese citizens.[10]
