White Sea Station

The White Sea Station [1] was a naval station of the British Royal Navy headquartered at Archangel, Russian Empire from 1917 to 1919. The station was commanded by the Rear-Admiral Commanding in the White Sea later the Senior Naval Officer, White Sea.

History

The Royal Navy had established a naval station at Archangel, Russia before 1918. On 30 October 1918 with Rear-Admiral John F. E. Green assumed command for the Archangel and White Sea Area [2] the stations flagship was HMS Glory, and Rear-Admiral Green assisted by his Flag Lieutenant Cuthbert F. B. Bowlby.[3] In 1919 he was replaced by Commodore Richard Hyde as Senior Naval Officer, White Sea and also Senior Naval Officer, Archangel.[4] In 1920 Rear-Admiral Green he was reassigned to the staff of Admiral Sir John de Robeck for duties in the Black Sea Area the station then fell into abeyance.[5]
