Wilhelm Knop
Wilhelm Knop (28 June 1817 – 28 January 1891) was a German agrochemist and pioneer of water culture. Together with Julius von Sachs he identified Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and Iron as essential elements of plant nutrition.[1] In addition, oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen are taken from the air and water, respectively, for respiration and photosynthesis.

Dennis Robert Hoagland and Daniel I. Arnon proposed that Sachs's solution (1860) and Knop's solution (1865) should be supplemented with Boron, Manganese, Zinc, Copper and Molybdenum for best results with water culture experiments.[2] Knop's nutrient solution, which consists of his four-salt mixture, is still commonly used today.
