Biography

Price was born in Cincinnati on May 20, 1836[1] and entered military service when the American Civil War broke out and sided with the Union Army in the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry as a captain.[2] He was the Assistant Commissary of Musters of the staff of William W. Averell. Due to his skills in administration, he was reassigned as staff of the United States Department of War located in Washington D.C. where he was made Assistant Adjutant General and then to Assistant Inspector General in the Cavalry Bureau.[3] He was brevetted Brigadier General in March 13, 1865 and became Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th Cavalry Regiment.[3] In 1867, Price organized a garrison of men from the 8th Cavalry Regiment and the 14th Infantry Regiment that were stationed in Fort Whipple to launch raids against the Hualapai during the Hualapai War.[4] Price retired in 1874[5] and died in December 30, 1881 in Germantown, Philadelphia. Price was buried at the Laurel Hill Cemetery.[1]
