Willie Herenton (basketball)

Willie Winston Herenton II is an American college basketball player for the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team, of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).[2]

Early life, family and education

Herenton grew up in the village of Lincolnshire, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago.[3] Prior to high school, he was Homeschooled by his mother.[4][5]

Herenton's grandfather is W. W. Herenton, the first elected African-American mayor of Memphis (serving for 17 years), Civil Rights Leader, and Golden Gloves boxer.[5] His brother, Rodney Herenton Jr., also played basketball.[6]

Basketball

Herenton began playing basketball in second grade and competed for Whitney Young High School in Chicago, Illinois.[7][2]

For his junior season, he transferred to Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois and played for the Stevenson Patriots.[8][9] As a junior, he averaged 8.5 points, 1.7 assist, and 2.5 rebounds per game.[10][11]

As a senior, he averaged 17.2 points, 1.8 steals, and shot 50% from the field. Herenton was named first team all area his senior year and was named a top 10 scorer in Stevenson High School history despite only playing 2 seasons.[12][2][13] On February 7, 2017, Herenton recorded his season-high 32 points against Zion Benton High School and received player of the week.[14][15]

Herenton started playing for the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team in the 2018-19 season.[5][16] He was awarded a scholarship in January 2019 and played in the 2018–19 season and was a scholarship player for the 2019–20 season.[3][2]

His senior year he averaged 1.2 points in a role of a defensive specialist off the bench.[17][18] Herenton was named NABC Honors Court for two years in a row averaging over a 3.2 GPA.[19][20]

Herenton graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in economics in 2021.[20]
