Career
2021–present: Viral success, "Gët Busy", and Up 2 Më
Yeat achieved viral success online through such platforms like TikTok.[1][2] Yeat initially emerged following his 4L mixtape, which released June 11, 2021.[3][2] The 4L project notably included "Sorry Bout That" and "Money Twërk".[3]
Later, he released the EP Trëndi which had mainstream success with "Mad Bout That" and "Fukit".[2]
A snippet of his song "Gët Busy" went viral online and attracted considerable media and fan attention upon its release.[4] The song was particularly cited by media outlets for its line: "this song already was turnt but here's a bell,", which was immediately followed by the ringing of church bells.[4][5] Fellow rappers Drake and Lil Yachty also referenced the line.[3]
On September 10, 2021, Yeat released his album Up 2 Më.[6] The album received generally positive reception from music reviewers. HipHopDX wrote that "Yeat's irreverence on Up 2 Më is intoxicating. His rapping style is so effortless it feels that he floats across the digicore-inspired beats. His latest will prove to be his biggest look yet, but Yeat's looking comfortable in the driver's seat."[1] Alphonse Pierre of Pitchfork gave the album a 6.7/10 rating, writing that Yeat "continues to go beyond the usual rage rap expectations."[3] Pierre also expressed that Yeat's vocal performance was refreshing, although the production was "stuck in the same box" for much of the album.[3] Chris Richards of The Washington Post also commented on Yeat's vocal performance, writing that the rapper "visits nearly every corner of his lungs, throat, mouth and sinuses," on the song "Turban".[5] Following the release of Up 2 Më, Yeat made his debut on the Rolling Stone Artists 500 list at number 296.[7]
Personal life
Yeat stated in an interview that he is of Mexican and Romanian ancestry, and went to Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Yeat was born in Irvine, California before moving to Fullerton, California for 14 years, then moving to Lake Oswego for high school. After graduating high school, he moved to New York City to pursue his music career.[2][8]
