Yolanda Pereira

Yolanda Pereira (1910–2001) was a Brazilian fashion model. In 1930, she became the first Brazilian to win the title of Miss Universe.[lower-alpha 1]

Life

Pereira was born on 16 October 1910, in Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. At the start of Pereira's modleing career, she won the Miss Rio Grande do Sul, a beauty pageant contest held by now defunct newspaper company Diário de Notícias.[1] She won the title of Miss Brazil (not to be confused with the modern edition which started in 1954) on July 14, 1930, elected by a jury composed of artists and intellectuals, including Olegário Mariano, Muniz Sodré, Casper Líbero, Oswaldo Orico, and Álvaro Moreira.[2][3] Two months later, competing with 25 foreign contestants, and before an international jury, Yolanda Pereira received the Miss Universe crown (the Brazilian edition of the International Pageant of Pulchritude, A.K.A. Miss Universe took place in Rio De Janeiro, while the American edition was held parallelly in Galveston, Texas, and was won by Dorothy Dell Goff.), making herself the first Brazilian woman to receive it.[4][5][6][7]

Yolanda Pereira died on 4 September 2001, at the age of 90.
