Yu River (Ningxia)

The Yu River (Chinese: 渝河; pinyin: Yú hé) is a seasonal river[1] in Northwest China, located in the territory of Longde County, Ningxia.[2] It originates from the western foot of Mount Liupan, [3] crossing Longde County, flowing through Shatang Town, Shenlin Township and Liancai Town, flowing into Hulu River in Jingning County and finally injecting into Wei River. [4]

The river is called "Mother River" by people in Lunde County.[5]

Basic information

Yu River emerges from the western foot of the Mount Liupan and eventually merges into the Wei River.

The river has a total length of 47.1 kilometers,[6] with a watershed area of 481 square kilometers,[7] and is the third-grade tributary of the Yellow River.[8]

Pollution and governance

Since the 1990s, the Yu River has become a "stinky river" with serious water pollution, soil erosion and poor ecological environment, making it a misery for local people. In 2016, Lunde County invested ¥456 million to govern the pollution of the river.[9]
