Background

Party is led by Ivan Bartoš since 2016. Under his leadership Czech Pirate Party became the third largest party in the Czech Republic after 2017 legislative election and received 22 seats.[2] Bartoš also led the party during 2021 election which party contested as part of Pirates and Mayors electoral alliance. Due to preferential voting Pirates received only 4 seats of 37 seats received by the alliance. After the election part of membership called for Bartoš's resignation.[3] Party joined the new government following the election.

On 13 December 2021 Senator Lukáš Wagenknecht announced his candidacy for party leader.[4] He stated that situation within party isn't good as party is becoming "submissive political accessory with only 4 MPs." He expressed worry that failure in 2021 legislative election could reflect itself in 2022 municipal elections.[5] Bartoš himself stated that he is yet to decide whether he will run for another term.[6]
