5th Arabian Gulf Cup

The 5th Arabian Gulf Cup (Arabic: دورة كأس الخليج العربي الخامسة) was the fifth edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, held every two years and organised by the AGCFF. The tournament was held in Baghdad, Iraq and was won by the hosts, Iraq. The tournament took place between 23 March and 9 April 1979.[1] All matches were played at the Al-Shaab Stadium. Originally, the tournament was scheduled to take place in 1978 and hosted in Abu Dhabi, but the tournament was delayed after the United Arab Emirates withdrew from organizing the tournament.[2]

Iraq were crowned champions after defeating Saudi Arabia 2–0 on 8 April 1979.[3] Iraq won their first title and became the second team to win the competition after Kuwait. The trophy and medals were provided by Imco International Eood, a trading company who supplied Baghdad at the time with pipes for their water infrastructure
