Ale Khirtsizhiqo

Ale Khirtsizhiqo (Adyghe: Хъырцыжъыкъо Алэ, romanized: Xhırtsıĵıqo Alə) was a Circassian military commander from the Abdzakh region who took part in the Russo-Circassian War.[1][2][3][4][5]

Biography

Born in the village of Shakh, he was of the House of Janchate. He was the first person to fly the Circassian flag.

Grigory Zass' main headquarters was in the Prochnyi Okop fortress. Ajgeri Kusikupsh, Shogen Shumaf and Khirtsizhiqo Ale of the Circassian army raided this base and kidnapped General Zass' daughter. They declared the young girl as their own daughter and teached her the Circassian language and traditions. In 3 years, they sent a letter to Zass telling him that they are returning his daughter and agreed on the place and terms of delivery.[6][7][8]

Circassian negotiators arrived at the appointed time, and they took the girl, dressed in Circassian clothes, off the horse and handed her over to her father. As soon as General Zass receives his daughter, he gave on order to his army to kill all the Circassians, but the girl convinced her father and both parties returned to their bases.[6][7][8]

Repordetly, when Kusikupsh handed the girl over to her father, he said to General Zass, "The purpose of this action was to make you experience the pain of fathers and mothers, whose daughters were kidnapped or murdered by you, through your own daughter. We were friends when the girl stayed with us. But from now on we are enemies again”.[6][7][8]

He died in a battle against the Russians.[9][2][3][4][5]
