Analogue Pocket

The Analogue Pocket is a FPGA-based handheld game console designed and manufactured by Analogue, Inc.;[1] it was announced on October 16, 2019 and released on December 13, 2021.[2] It is designed to play games designed for handhelds of the fourth, fifth and sixth generation of video game consoles.

Design

The Analogue Pocket was designed as a "tribute to portable gaming".[3]

The console features a design reminiscent of the Game Boy, with additional buttons for the supported platforms. It features a 3.5" 1600x1440 LTPS LCD display, an SD card port, a link cable port compatible with Game Boy link cables, an HDMI port for screen mirroring, two USB ports for wired controllers and Bluetooth support for wireless controllers.

The Analogue Pocket uses an Altera Cyclone V processor, and is compatible with the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges out of the box.[4] With cartridge adapters (sold separately) the Analogue Pocket can play Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, Neo Geo Pocket Color and Atari Lynx game cartridges.[5] The Analogue Pocket includes an additional FPGA, allowing developers to create other "cores".

Release

The Analogue Pocket was announced on October 16, 2019.[6][7][8][9] Its release was delayed three separate times since the initial Pocket press release. Analogue cited global chip shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for the product’s delay until December 2021.[10]

Awards

Analogue Pocket was nominated for Wallpaper's 2019 Design Awards.[11] Pocket was also awarded two Fast Company awards for Best Product Design of 2020[12] and Best Design Innovations of 2020 in the North America region.[13]
