Ca Mè Mallorquí

The Ca Mè Mallorquí is a breed of pointing dog originating in Majorca, Balearic Islands, (Spain), and historically it has been used as a pointing dog.

History

The Ca Mè Mallorquí is native to the island of Majorca in the Balearic Islands and is one of several very similar breeds of pointing dog native to Spain, including the Pachón Navarro and the Perdiguero de Burgos.[1][2] The breed was very popular with Majorcan hunters throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, due to the writings of a number of visiting sportsmen it also gained a level of international fame throughout that period.[1][3] Predominantly found on Majorca, the breed was also common on the island of Menorca in the 19th and 20th centuries.[2]

The breed's numbers declined throughout the 20th century due to the increased popularity of imported pointing breeds such as the Pointer and German Shorthaired Pointer, and by the end of the century the breed was almost extinct.[1] In the early 21st century efforts were made to save the breed, a breed club was formed, the Associació de caçadors i criadors de ca Mè mallorquí, and in 2002 the Balearic Islands Government's department of agriculture and fisheries became involved in the recovery program, publishing a breed standard in December of that year.[1][2] In 2004 Spanish Government's Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación became involved, formally recognising the breed and the breed club.[1][2]

As of 2019 it was estimated several hundred examples of the breed existed, not all of them being registered with the Associació de caçadors i criadors de ca Mè mallorquí.[1]

Description

The Ca Mè Mallorquí is a medium-sized dog breed with healthy adult dogs typically standing between 50 and 60 centimetres (20 and 24 in) and weighing between 18 and 23 kilograms (40 and 51 lb); bitches are slightly smaller, typically standing between 45 and 55 centimetres (18 and 22 in) and weighing between 15 and 20 kilograms (33 and 44 lb).[2] The breed has long, well-muscled legs, a wide and deep chest, and a relatively short tail and neck.[2] Their heads have a straight muzzle with fine dewlaps with medium sized and hanging ears that lie close to the face and are high set and flat.[2]

The breed has a short and smooth coat which comes in a number of colours including solid black, brown, orange or lemon, bicoloured black, brown, orange or lemon with white or tricolour.[2]
