Cameron Sexton

Cameron Sexton (born November 11, 1970) is a Republican member of the Tennessee House of Representatives for the 25th district. He is the 83rd and current Speaker of the House in the Tennessee House of Representatives. Sexton served as Majority Caucus Chairman prior to becoming speaker.[1][2]

Biography

Cameron Sexton was born on November 11, 1970.[1] He is an 8th generation Tennessean. He received a B.A. in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee in 1994.[1][2][3] He then served as a community liaison for former Congressman Van Hilleary.[2][3]

Education

Sexton is a 1989 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. He received a BA degree from the University of Tennessee in 1994.[4][5]

Career

Sexton worked for a pharmaceutical company as a representative before becoming a Tennessee State Representative. While not in session, he works for Cumberland County Bank in Business Development.

Politics

Sexton has served as a representative, in the Tennessee State House of Representatives since 2010.[5] Sexton was elected as House Majority Whip in the Tennessee House of Representatives for the 108th General Assembly,[6] served as the Majority Caucus Chairman for the 111th general assembly[7] and became speaker of the house in 2019.[8]

In 2013, he sponsored legislation allowing businesses to file forms electronically instead of through the mail for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit.[9]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sexton opposed vaccine requirements.[10]

Personal life

Sexton is married to Lacey McRae Sexton, a pharmacist, and he has two children from a previous marriage.[1][2][3] Cameron is a member of Central Baptist Church.
