Conrad Schools of Science

Conrad Schools of Science is a public high school in unincorporated New Castle County, Delaware, United States and has a Wilmington postal address.[2] It opened in 1935 as the Henry C. Conrad High School before closing in 1978 to become the middle school; existing students were bussed to Wilmington High School.[3] It reopened in 2007 as the magnet school Conrad Schools of Science.[4] It is one of seven high schools in the Red Clay Consolidated School District and offers grades six through twelve.[1][4][5]

Student life

Academics

The high school curriculum offers six pathways: biomedical (science), biotechnology (Research), veterinary (science), nursing technology, physical therapy and athletic healthcare, and computer science.[6]

Athletics

Conrad Schools offers the following sports: football, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, ice hockey, swimming, indoor track, wrestling, golf, lacrosse, baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field.[7] They are part of the Diamond State Athletic Conference.[8]

Mascot

In 2015, a committee was formed to explore the possibility changing the Redskins mascot that has been used for 80 years on grounds of being offensive.[9] The Retire the Mascot Committee's mission statement centered on "[promoting] a cultural understanding for the retirement of our current Conrad Schools of Science mascot and [to] select a yet to be named, new mascot, that will proudly represent our school, our community, and our history".[10] However, they were met with more opposition than anticipated; a poll led by The News Journal showed that 85% of voters felt the school should keep the existing name and logo.[11] In June 2016, the Red Clay School Board voted 4–2 in favor of the change; in early 2017, the public voted overwhelmingly for its replacement to be the Red Wolves.[12][13]
