Hashimoto was a member of the Japan men's national gymnastics team competing at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.[4]
Career
2019
Hashimoto competed at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, where his team placed third all around.[5] On the pommel horse, he finished in 9th place, and on the horizontal bar, he finished in 4th place.
2021
At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Hashimoto competed for team Japan, which also included Kazuma Kaya, Takeru Kitazono, and Wataru Tanigawa.[6] Hashimoto won an Olympic silver with the squad in the men's all around team competition,[7] posting a combined score of 262.397, which was only 0.103 points behind the winning Russian Olympic Committee team.[1] He also won gold medals in the men's individual all-around and horizontal bar competitions with total scores of 88.465 and 15.066,[1] making him the most successful male gymnast at these Olympics with three medals—two (individual) golds and one (team) silver. Due to his young age at just 19 years, 11 months and 21 days old when he won his first Olympic gold medal, Hashimoto also became Japan's second youngest and one of only two teenage male gymnasts in history to accomplish that feat after Kenzō Shirai, who won team gold six days younger in 2016. This would also include by default Hashimoto becoming the youngest Japanese gymnast to win Olympic gold on the men's individual all-around and horizontal bar events. In the men's individual floor exercise and pommel horse event finals, Hashimoto would place eleventh and ninth, the identical rankings he achieved at the last world championships.
On October 18–24, 2021, at the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan, Hashimoto was the top qualifier on the men's individual all-around and horizontal bar events with scores of 88.040 and 14.633. He went on and earned himself two silver medals on those events respectively with scores of 87.964 and 14.600. Both of China, Hu Xuwei and Zhang Boheng won gold medals on those respective aforementioned events too with scores of 87.981 and 15.166. Lastly, Hashimoto also placed fourth in the men's individual parallel bars finals with a score of 15.000, and qualified for the men's individual finals on pommel horse in fourth place, and floor exercise in fifth place. However, he withdrew from both men's individual finals—floor exercise, which made way for countryman Kazuma Kaya to take his spot and finish sixth, and pommel horse, which resulted in second reserve Harutyun Merdinyan of Armenia to replace him and finish eighth.
