Dark Winds

Dark Winds is an upcoming American psychological thriller television series created by Graham Roland based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman. The first season will consist of six episodes, and is expected to premiere on AMC+ and AMC in 2022.

Premise

The series follows two Navajo police officers, Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, in the 1970s Southwest.[1][2]

Production

Development

In July 2021, it was announced that AMC had greenlighted Dark Winds for a six-episode order.[1] The series is created by Graham Roland, who executive produces with Zahn McClarnon, George R.R. Martin, Robert Redford, Tina Elmo, Vince Gerardis, Vince Calandra, and Chris Eyre.[1][3] Redford previously produced two other adaptions of the Leaphorn & Chee series, The Dark Wind and Skinwalkers. Calandra serves as showrunner, and Eyre will direct the pilot. The series is produced by AMC Networks and Dark Winds Productions.[3][6]

Writing

The writers' room is all Native American.[7]

Casting

Alongside the series announcement, Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon were cast as Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee.[1][3] In August 2021, Noah Emmerich was cast as Whitover.[2] The same month, Jessica Matten was cast as Bernadette Manuelito.[4] Rainn Wilson was cast as Devoted Dan in early September.[5]

Filming

Filming began in late August 2021 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.[8][6] Location shoots will also occur in Española, Tesuque Pueblo, Cochiti Pueblo, and the Navajo Nation.[9][6] In mid-October, the series filmed in Mexican Hat, Monument Valley and Kayenta.[10] Filming is expected to last until November 2021.[8]
