Dawa Chaffa

Dawa Chaffa is a district located in the Oromia Zone of the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Dawa Chaffa (10.82°N 39.81°E / 10.82; 39.81) is bordered on the south by Artuma Fursi, on the southwest by the Semien Shewa Zone, on the northwest by the Debub Wollo Zone, on the northeast by the Argobba special woreda, and on the east by Dawa Harewa. Towns in Dawa Cheffa include Welede. Dawa Chaffa was part of former Chaffa Gola Dewerahmedo woreda. The town of Kamisee is surrounded by Dawa Chaffa.

Demographics

Based on the 2007 national census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA), this woreda has a total population of 133,388, of whom 66,746 are men and 66,642 women; 2,876 or 2.16% are urban inhabitants. The majority of the inhabitants were Muslim, with 98.73% reporting that as their religion, while 1.1% of the population said they practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.[1]

History

21st Century

On 21 March 2021 and following days, numerous atrocities were committed in this woreda by the Amhara Region special forces, Fano, and reportedly by soldiers pertaining to the Eritrean Defence Forces. The killing spree started in Ataye, where they murdered Oromo children, mothers, elders and religious leaders. The next day, relatives and witnesses called the ENDF for help, which did not come, rather internet and telephone services were shut down by the Ethiopian authorities. There were victims all over the Oromia Zone of Amhara region. Particularly in Dawa Chaffa, the Majete community was affected by the killing spree. The Amhara state forces and fano set fire to homesteads, properties, and places of worship. In this district, the bridge and schools were destroyed by shelling, and Orta village was also strongly affected.[2]

By the end of August 2021, an internal note of the EU delegation in Ethiopia mentioned that the Oromo Liberation Army occupied several rural districts near the town of Kamisee in the Amhara Region, such as Dawa Chaffa.[3]
