In June 2020, Ari Aster said he would write and direct a 4-hour long "nightmare comedy" with Joaquin Phoenix attached to star.[2] On February 18, 2021, A24 announced it would produce the film, now titled Disappointment Blvd.[3] On June 21, 2021, Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Kylie Rogers, and Amy Ryan joined the cast.[4] In July 2021, it was reported Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Denis Ménochet, Michael Gandolfini, Zoe Lister-Jones and Hayley Squires would also star.[5] Principal photography began on June 28, 2021, in Montreal, Quebec, and was expected to conclude in October 2021.[6][7][8][9]
