Domitilla the Elder

Flavia Domitilla Major[lower-alpha 1] (died before 69, perhaps c. 65) was the wife of the Roman Emperor Vespasian[1] and mother of the emperors Titus and Domitian. She died before her husband ascended to the throne.

Life

Flavia Domitilla was born in Sabratha to Italic colonists who had moved there during the reign of Augustus. She was the daughter of Flavius Liberalis, a humble quaestor’s clerk from Ferentium (modern Ferento), a country town in Italy. Before her marriage, she was a formal mistress to an equestrian.

Vespasian married her around AD 38. They had three known children, Domitilla the Younger and of the emperors Titus and Domitian, but they might have had four other children who died in childhood.[2] She died before Vespasian became emperor.

She was the grandmother of Saint Flavia Domitilla,[3] daughter of Domitilla the Younger.
