"Earth" is a charity single by Lil Dicky. It was released on April 19, 2019, three days before Earth Day, through Dirty Burd, Commission and BMG. The song features vocals from 30 artists.[1][2][3]

Background

On April 19, 2019, Dicky took to Twitter to announce the release of a new song the following week.[4] It was also reported that Justin Bieber would return to music as a guest feature on a new Lil Dicky song.[5] Bieber confirmed the collaboration on Twitter a few days later.[6]

Music video

On April 17, Dicky released a preview of the video that was released the following day. Co-directed by Nigel Tierney of Emmy-winning studio RYOT (the studio that made Behind the Fence VR), Federico Heller of 3Dar (the studio that made Uncanny Valley), Oddbot Animation, and Iconic Engine,[7][8] the music video includes performances by 30 celebrities and singer-songwriters, such as Sia, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Halsey, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brendon Urie, Charlie Puth, Snoop Dogg, Miley Cyrus, among others.[2]

Reception

The song received mostly negative reviews from critics. In a Pitchfork review, Jeremy D. Larson panned "Earth" as a "terrible song" that "sounds less like a charity single and more like a theme to a downmarket Disney clone made explicitly to launder money for an offshore criminal enterprise".[9] Spin magazine included the song in their list of the worst songs of 2019, calling it worse than Dicky's 2018 single "Freaky Friday".[10] The song received a 0.68 out of 5 on Rate Your Music,[11] with some users calling it the worst song they have ever heard. The song received a 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb,[12] and an average review of 1 out of 5 on Discogs.[13] On the website Musicboard, the song received a 1.4 out of 5,[14] with some users insulting Lil Dicky. Tech2 News Staff gave an overall mixed review on the song.[15] The website Album Of The Year gave the song a user score of 5/100,[16] with several users insulting both the song and Lil Dicky. Journalist Evan Haynos claimed the song "lands flat" and "The humor in the song ... misses the target."[17] Music journalist Gregg Johnson gave the song a generally positive review.[18] Writer Keith Mann heavily criticized the song, saying it is "astonishingly bad" and "generic, soulless, laughless, [and] overblown".[19]
