It was announced in August 2018 that Michelle Yeoh and Awkwafina were cast to star in an “interdimensional action film” from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, with Anthony and Joe Russo set to produce.[2]

The film received a tax credit in March 2019 to film in California.[3] Kwan and Scheinert stated in September that they were still waiting for a greenlight for the film.[4]

Awkwafina exited the project due to scheduling conflicts in January 2020. Stephanie Hsu, James Hong, Jonathan Ke Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis were added to the cast, with Hsu replacing Awkwafina. Filming began in January 2020 and A24 acquired the distribution rights to the film.[5]
